Latest Update (2010-01-20): As Daniel's newest hiking "project", expect to see progress on the Texas 7000 as time and owner-access permit. He's investigating access to some of the summits in the Davis Mountains, so stay tuned! So you're probably thinking, "Man, that Daniel guy is obsessed with mountains in West Texas," and you'd definitely be right. :) The more time I spend hiking in West Texas, the more I appreciate the stark beauty and hidden paradise that the area has to offer. Most, but not all, of the 6,000' - 7,000' summits in the state offer extreme seclusion. I wouldn't go so far as to claim any of them to be unclimbed, though, you can definitely have a feeling of blazing a new trail as you hike up the remote slopes. In a world moving at an ever-faster pace, the Texas 7000-ers offer the opportunity to truly slow down, and even to go back in time.
As a word of caution, most of these mountains are on private properties. As always, anyone attempting to visit the area should fully honor the wishes of each property owner with regard to hiking access. Have fun, but be respectful.
