A rainy "summit"!
Britton Hill, the highest area of Florida's Walton County, is a broad sand dune that has allowed agrove of trees and short grasses to take hold. The surrounding countryside is surprisingly hilly, though the sand has made it very easy for the forces of erosion to carve a great many rivulets that make their way ~50 mi to the Gulf of Mexico.

A trail system has been constructed around the Britton Hill area with three relatively short loops. The longest of the three crosses over the majority of the large 340' closed contour and allows just under 100' of total vertical gain.

2005.03.16 - I visited this peak after a long, dark and rainy drive from Brasstown Bald in northern Georgia. The most dangerous part of my highpointing extravaganza came in tyring to stay awake along the lonely stretches of road. Luckily, God provided me with such torrential rain, that I couldn't help but remain observant!

At about 2:00 in the morning (CST), I finally rolled into the parking lot of Lakewood Park. The rain had slowed to a fine drizzle, though the leaf-litter and underlying sand were utterly saturated. Recent improvements to this park included the construction of a short trail around the highest contour. Since there is some uncertainty as to where the actual summit is, I decided to take a spooky walk through the trees at this late hour.

The trail seemed to end almost as soon as it began, but I felt confident that I had, in fact, crossed over the highest spot. Fighting to stay awake, I left Florida's Chomolungma, and drove back into Alabama toward Cheaha Mountain. I eventually succumbed to fatigue and stopped at a truck stop for a few hours of what turned out to be miserable though surprisingly refreshing night of car-camping; when you haven't slept in almost 24 hours, nearly anything helps!
