The short, sweet trail to the top of Rhode Island
Summit area
Summit rock partially blocked by yours-truly
Jerimoth, a Hebrew word meaning "elevation," is the name of a hill in far western Rhode Island. This 808' bump is primarily noted because it happens to be the highest point the the state. Up until recently, private property issues prevented visitors from venturing to the actual highest rock except for 4-5 weekends a year. Now, however, the current property owners allow access across their land every weekend to the summit that is actually owned by Brown University.

2006.02.25 - Not much to say on this one... I fought sleep as I drove from Mt. Frissell, CT out to the western border of Rhode Island; I had been up for over 30 hours, after all! Being used to Texas driving, I was pleasantly surprised to drive through three states in just a few hours. Passing through many small towns and around one large one, I eventually pulled off of RI-101 a few tens of feet away from the highpoint.
Just off the road, I found a laminated map places by the "trailhead" leading to the top. The trail led past 3 benchmarks (really 1 BM and two reference marks), as it lead through a sparse forest; even trying to stretch out the hike, it could not last more than 5 minutes. I arrived at the large boulder and set up to take my summit picture. Afterward, I looked around the area a bit before deciding that I should go ahead and get going toward the next goal.
Adams, MA would be several hours away, and I wanted to go there to get as much sleep as possible before climbing Mt. Greylock. I drove through quite a snowstorm on the way, which was actually quite a blessing as it forced me to concentrate and stay awake. Well after dark, I pulled into the Cheshire Harbor trailhead and fell asleep in my bag almost immediately. It was one of my better times car-camping to date.
